All of us have dreams and for most of us, they will always be dreams. Truth is though they don’t have to be, you just have to let go of the fear of failing and take the leap. I spent over twenty years doing the things I thought I was supposed to do because that is what people expected of me. But over the last couple of years I finally started living for myself. I became an actress and landed the lead role in a few independent films, I wrote my debut novel and just finished my second one. On top of that I coach middle school cheerleading and hold down a full time job. How in the world can you possibly do all that and still keep your sanity intact you ask? I’ll tell you how, I make the time for the important things in my life. Does that sometimes mean making sacrifices? Yes, but for me they are worth it.
While my friends are out sipping cocktails on a Friday night, I’m at home with the TV turned off, music on low, cell phone on vibrate and Facebook closed typing away. Before I know it, it’s almost midnight and I was able to get in a couple thousand words in the time it took my friends to down three martinis. Sure I want to go out on a Friday night after a fifty hour work week between coaching and my real job, but if I did, I wouldn’t get any writing done and for me, seeing my name on the front of a book cover and reading reviews of the impact it had on my readers is worth a lot more than any night on the town.
The phone calls on a Saturday morning I get when it’s 80 degrees in June to come and hang out by the pool. Man, I wish I could accept, but I have to film that day. My weekend, my free day, it’ll be spent in front of the camera; reciting lines take after take in the unbearable southern heat. But, after that 8 or 10 hour day, when I get home exhausted and curl up into bed, I fall asleep with a smile on my face because for that small moment in time, I was an actress.
If you saw my daily planner it might make your head spin, but I will tell you what you would be surprised to see on it. I actually plan out writing times. I personally find that in my life night time is when things settle down, so that is my writing time. For me it’s not every night, but it’s every night I write it in my planner. Why do I do that? Because we make time for all the things we believe are important in our lives. If writing is important to you, make time for it. No excuses. We don’t become better writers or published authors by always saying “I’ll do it tomorrow.” So go, get writing!
To all the writers out there who sometimes feel so overwhelmed with their everyday life that they can’t seem to fit in their writing, make it just as important as everything else in your life. You wouldn’t wake up on a Monday morning and say “I don’t feel like going to work today,” and then turn over and go back to bed right? So why would you as a writer, an author say “I don’t feel like writing today?” Make writing a job, a priority and figure out where in your schedule you can fit it in. It may not be the same time every day, but waking up an hour or so before you need to, DVRing your favorite show each night so you can sit at the computer or staying in on a Friday night is all it takes. Start small and gradually increase your time from there.
So, what are you waiting for? Get writing!
About Courtney Giardina
Courtney Giardina was born and raised just outside of Rochester,NY where she jumped and tumbled her way through school as a gymnast and cheerleader. She credits cheering under the lights on Friday nights as the reason for her love of football. Realizing that becoming a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader was probably not a realistic ambition, Courtney decided to take her creative talents down a different route. In May 2012 she traded cold, snowy winters for extremely humid summers in Charlotte, North Carolina and worked early mornings and late nights on top of a full-time job to create Tear Stained Beaches. When she’s not in the midst of writing songs, poems or debut novels, Courtney enjoys being in front of the camera as an actress, running 5Ks and singing loudly to country music in her Jeep. In her world, everywhere is a stage.
