THE HOLMES MYTHOS
"I'd love to know more about how the author carves out her own mythology with so many takes on Sherlock Holmes recently. The TV show Sherlock, the modernized show Elementary, and it wasn't too long ago that the Robert Downey, Jr. movie came out. Even writing about a niece, it'd be interesting to know how she keeps her content fresh and unique while being true to the inspiration."
This is such a wonderful question. I’m so glad I didn’t ask it of myself before I started writing or I would have been terrified to start. Yes, there are so many current takes on Holmes. I was weaned on Basil Rathbone, teethed on Jeremy Brett, and found inner peace with Robert Downey, Jr. I think the BBC show is lovely and don’t like Elemental very much. I’ve actually never read another Holmes “pastiche” of any sort. My late brother was a Holmes fan, and one of the last chats we had was about Holmes being brought back to life by Conan Doyle.
Because my heroine is actually not the niece of Sherlock Holmes, but actually a bit off at times (thanks in part to a mild opiate habit), I didn’t have to worry terribly about the man himself. Well, he does make a fantasy appearance, but it is certainly drawn right from Conan Doyle himself. It’s Conan Doyle who becomes an actor in this book, and especially in the sequel. I’m not sure how many folks have made him a fictional character. It’s a bit inside out, you see.
Lillian Holmes is isolated, brilliant, and a bit delusional. She fantasizes she is Holmes’ niece, fantasizes about becoming a detective, in an era when to do so would have been verboten for a lady. In that way, she’s a bit stuck in what we typically consider adolescent behavior—trying to become like a character in a book - be it reading Pride & Prejudice for the 100th time, or wanting to be Dr. Who’s next companion. So she is prone to quoting Holmes, and trying to turn her girlfriend into Watson, but our hero knocks a bit of sense into her…well, after threatening her life.
At the cusp of the twentieth century, an heiress turned detective enters a world of deception and danger and must learn to trust her nemesis with both her life and her love.
Tormented by a tragic past, Miss Lillian Holmes nonetheless found the strength to go on, to become the greatest female detective of her time. To make her uncle proud. Except…he was not truly her uncle. Sherlock was a fictional character, and Lil was less a true detective than a sheltered twenty-six year old heiress with taste for mystery…and morphine. But then she saw him. Leaping from her neighbor’s second-story window, a beautiful stranger. With the recent murders plaguing Baltimore, here was a chance to reveal the truth.
Except, the Leaping Man was far more than he seemed. A wanton creature of darkness, an entry point to a realm of deception and evil, and to a Truth she had waited countless years to uncover, he would threaten far more than Lillian’s life. He would take both her heart and soul. And she would rejoice in it.
